Mapping familiar journeys through printmaking

Much of my work begins with walking. The routes around Horton Heath and the surrounding Hampshire landscape have become familiar through repetition, particularly the daily walks I take with my dog. Although I follow many of the same paths, there is always something different to notice: a change in the light, a person encountered along the way, or a detail that catches my attention.
I've been exploring how to map these journeys without making conventional maps. Rather than recording routes and locations precisely, I wanted to make images that bring together fragments of landscape, observation and memory.
An imagined map
The circular form of the ancient Phaistos Disc provided a starting point for this series. Its arrangement of symbols within a circular structure suggested a way of organising the different elements of a walk.

In Memory Maps: Walking Discs, I use this form to create imagined maps of familiar journeys. Paths, buildings, trees, figures, and other observations become part of an invented visual language. The resulting images sit somewhere between a map of a place and a record of how that place is experienced and remembered.
Making the prints
Each Walking Disc is made using two coloured linocut layers, followed by a final black wood engraving. The colour layers establish the underlying structure of the image, while the engraved black lines add detail and connect the different elements.
The prints are hand-printed in my Hampshire studio. Although the eight images belong to the same series, each has its own arrangement of shapes, colours and marks.
